You have come to the classes. You love your practice.  And now you would like to learn about yoga beyond the mat. Pranamaya Yoga Media is happy to educate you about yoga theory and philosophy. Read on to learn more about the yoga philosophy DVDs that will teach you the details of the human anatomy as it applies to yoga, as well as the age-old holistic practice of Ayurveda and more to round out your yoga practice.

Curious About Anatomy?

Paul Grilley is a Pranamaya Master Teacher who is credited with changing the paradigm of how yoga is taught in relation to each individual’s anatomy. The typical yoga teacher looks at a student’s posture in class and assumes that the student must fit the posture. In his influential DVD Anatomy for Yoga, Paul Grilley demonstrates that it is in fact just the opposite: the pose must fit the student! This is one of our most popular yoga philosophy DVDs since it changes the way students and teachers look at yoga.

Consider, for example, a student with one leg slightly longer than the other. Though many poses require the hips to be parallel to the floor, this type of student would not be able to make their hips parallel to the floor while because their bone structure naturally shifts their hips’ position. Another example is a student with very long arms. For them, in Dandasana (staff pose) it may be impossible to completely straighten their arms since they may need to be bent to sit in this pose.

Wonder What Yogis Mean When They Call Themselves Vata, Pitta, or Kapha?

Ayurveda is a type of medicine from the Hindu tradition. It categorizes three different dosha: Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. The idea is that each person’s body is predominantly a specific type, or,  in some cases, a mix of all three types. Vata is typically tense, anxious, and thin. Pitta is athletic and fiery. Kapha is slow moving and curvaceous. The idea is that to balance these types, one should eat foods that are the opposite to balance out the body. For example, if you are Kapha, eat spicy foods to counter your slow moving nature. Learn How to Access Your Life Force

Though the Western world has popularized yoga as a means of looking good, yoga is traditionally designed to access prana (life force). Meditation is a means of accessing this life force by pushing away thoughts. According to yoga philosophy, the mind plays tricks on us and inhibits us from being in tune with the greater universal spirit. To move away from physical limitations, we practice yoga poses to free the body of the ailments that keep us fixated on the physical world. To move away from mental traps, we practice mindfulness and meditation to gain access to the life force that lies within each of us.

Connect your mind, body, and spirit through Pranamaya’s yoga philosophy DVDs, including courses in advanced styles of yoga, including Yin Yoga and Universal Yoga.
